At Decor + Design 2023, 13 – 16 July in Melbourne, we’ll be elevating the 19th edition of the show with an increased focus on Australian and socially conscious design. Our exhibitor Ink & Spindle is an inspiring example of a company that combines stunning designs with a truly ethical approach, through sustainable and locally made textiles.

All of Ink & Spindle’s textiles are designed and hand-printed in their studio in Abbotsford Convent. Founder Lara Cameron describes the brand’s collection as very much inspired by the Australian landscape, with stunning interpretations of our diverse birdlife and unique native flora.

“Our range is designed to have timeless appeal,” says Lara. “Rather than focusing too closely on current industry trends, our furnishings should sit beautifully in the home for decades to come.”

Lara originally started Ink & Spindle in 2008 with two other designers. In 2013, when she was looking for a new business partner, it was the perfect opportunity for Caitlin Klooger (right) to come on board.  With their dual backgrounds in graphic design, interior design & landscape architecture, they weave together a variety of skills & passions in leading the Ink & Spindle team.

Serious About Sustainability

The brand is militant about its sustainable credentials. Ink & Spindle’s manufacturing journey starts in a carbon neutral, ethical mill in Belgium, which grows, spins and weaves flax fibres into high quality linen. “All our linens are Belgian Linen certified, and also eco-linen or OEKO-tex certified,” says Lara.

Once these beautiful rolls of cloth reach Australian shores, they are rolled out on the Ink & Spindle print table and screen printed by hand using GOTS Certified, water-based inks. These are hand-mixed in the studio to their own bespoke recipes. Designs are intentionally timeless to increase the lifespan of the products the brand produces.

“Our home furnishing products are also designed with minimal waste practices in mind, with all offcuts or trimmings being repurposed or on-sold as smaller products.”

Lara says that they get the most joy from working with client who have a long-standing connection with the brand, who eventually have the opportunity to use Ink & Spindle’s textiles throughout their new home or renovation.

“This often happens in a range of curtains, blinds and soft furnishings. These customers embody the exact values we strive to promote – slow, well considered furnishings aligned with the individual’s ethos.”

We’re delighted that Ink & Spindle will be exhibiting in 2023 at Decor + Design in Melbourne.

“Visitors will be able to explore a fantastic cross-section of our range, with examples of how our textiles can be applied to domestic furnishings. We will also be presenting new sampling & display options for both our established & new trade customer base.”
