Art exists not simply to adorn walls – it is a sledgehammer that can break them down. Melbourne artist Pimpisa Tinpalit’s work is a great example of how art can force us to contemplate our own existence while adding an element of the visually spectacular to interior design.
With a Master’s Degree in Fine Art with an emphasis on sculpture, and over 12 years experience as a professional artist, Pimpisa’s work has been showcased by several solo and group exhibitions in Thailand, Japan, USA and Australia. She has also produced several public sculptures in Thailand and abroad. With an immediately recognisable style perhaps best described as a whimsical blend of the realistic and abstract, Pimpisa will be bringing her unique pieces to Design Laneway at the 2017 Decor + Design show, 20 – 23 July in Melbourne. We delved into the inspiration behind her work in the lead up to the show.

Pimpisa, can you tell us about the inspiration behind your collection of works ‘Freedom-Captivity’?
This series was inspired by the power of free will upon freedom and captivity. Both freedom and captivity can be imposed physically, mentally, or both. Often our own insecurities and anxieties will prevent us from living freely, and so we become captives of own thoughts.
Conversely, self-confidence can allow us to live freely and explore new challenges in life and grow into better people.
However, what appears to be freedom to one may appear as captivity to another. Furthermore, we are generally poor assessors of our own states of willful freedom and captivity. Though freedom and captivity are antonyms, delineating their boundaries in reality can therefore be far more complicated.
I feel it is my duty as an artist to question and explore concepts such as this. My hope is that through figurative representation I can both explore my own questions and also answer them during the creative process. Ideally, this knowledge will transfer to my viewers and benefit them as well.
This series attempts to represent this dichotomy through figurative representation. Birds represent freedom and their humans represent the power of free will.

Why are you looking forward to being a part of Design Laneway at Decor + Design 2017?
Being part of Design Laneway is an opportunity to get more exposure to the interior design community and also gain more experience in exhibiting. Gaining feedback from interior designers on trends and colours is great advice. It is also worth testing the market with some of the now more accessible pieces that I have created for this show.
