When Decor + Design celebrates its 21st edition, 16 – 18 July at Melbourne Exhibition Centre, visitors will be welcomed by a striking installation at the entrance to the show, created by Melbourne-based lighting studio ILANEL. Responding to the 2025 theme of Elements and drawing on the studio’s own celestial aesthetic, COSMOS by ILANEL will be a visual feast. Step through the installation into the Green Design Show, which will flow into Decor + Design and features including VIVID Emerging Designer Awards, the new Elements Bar and the Seminar Series, which will take place in a gorgeous new Seminar Theatre.
Known for immersive light experiences that fuse art, science, and storytelling, ILANEL was founded by visionary designer Ilan El. The Melbourne-based atelier is celebrated for its bespoke luminaries and large-scale light-based installations. Ilan’s creative journey began with training and practicing as an architect, where he developed a strong foundation in design and spatial concepts. In 2005, he relocated to Melbourne to join the Master of Design program at RMIT University, where he deepened his understanding of lighting design principles, the physics of light, and its psychological and emotional impact on people.
This transformative experience sparked Ilan’s passion for crafting immersive and experiential lighting. Fascinated by the interplay of light, colour, and perception, Ilan explored how light could create emotional resonance and enhance human connections. His designs often incorporate interactive, playful, and automated elements, showcasing light’s transformative power to inspire joy and foster a sense of connectivity.
In 2010, Ilan established ILANEL Design Studio. The studio takes an innovative approach to the visible spectrum, exploring how light interacts with form, movement, and reflection. From glowing sculptural objects to captivating installations, Ilan’s creations often transform spaces into dynamic environments that encourage engagement and introspection.
COSMOS by ILANEL will include a constellation of three signature lights: Supernova, Flash, and Pendant. Each piece has been chosen for its ability to capture different aspects of cosmic energy, creating a sensory experience as visitors enter the show.
SUPERNOVA
Supernova presents an assemblage of luminous and obscure shards, shining bright like a powerful stellar explosion captured in a frozen moment. This arresting piece features hand-brushed and anodised metallic facets accompanied by a customisable light source configuration. It is available in both Round and Linear versions.
DOUBLE FLASH
The Double Flash pendant is a sculptural piece that evokes, in a series of bold strokes, the electrifying power of a lightning bolt shooting down from the sky. Inert yet mobile, jagged yet sinuous, this statement piece moves uncannily between two and three dimensions, now a flat shape, now an angular projection. A minimal and striking piece charged with energy.
COMET
Comet embodies the essence of a shooting star, a solitary streak of light traversing the cosmos, often accompanied by a luminous nucleus. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, Comet showcases a slotted tube that delicately bathes its surroundings with dimmable illumination. Adding an extra touch of artistry, each pendant is graced with an array of exquisite hand-blown glass beads, presenting a range of distinctive design choices.

Comet Pendant by ILANEL
COSMOS by ILANEL at the entrance to Decor + Design and the Green Design Show will be a portal to world of inspiration and a reminder of how great design unleashes possibilities. It will also tie beautifully into the show’s broader theme of Elements, which takes inspiration from the cosmos to explore light, earth, air, and the surreal magic of design. Drawing on influences like René Magritte and Elsa Schiaparelli, this year’s visual identity is a celebration of imagination, illusion, and celestial creativity.
