At Decor + Design, we always have one eye fixed on the horizon. We think 2025 will be brimming with modular designs, biophilia, biomaterials and nostalgic inspiration. The focus will be on making homes functional, beautiful and reflective of individual values, with increasingly innovative tech blended and disguised with craft. The combination will create rooms that simultaneously streamline and restore the spirit.
The 21st edition of Decor + Design will take place at Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 16th – 18th July. The only dedicated trade-only, large-scale exhibition for the design industry, it will feature 200+ exhibitors and an expected 10,000+ design industry visitors, including residential and commercial interior designers, architects, retailers and industry media.
Here are six trends we expect to see dominating next year…
Hemp and Bamboo
Recycled and eco-friendly materials are now firmly mainstream and we’ll continue to see more widespread adoption and innovation in this area. Furniture crafted from recycled, upcycled, or biodegradable materials is not just a preference but a priority as legislation kicks into gear to circumvent waste problems and work towards Net Zero. Expect to see natural fibres like hemp, rattan and bamboo become staples in furniture design. The 2025 Green Design Show at Decor + Design will feature the latest in sustainable design, such as this Hemp Chair (left) exhibited by Azend Interiors in 2024.
Bioplastic accents will also begin to be more widespread, such as sustainable plastics derived from organic sources. The 2nd edition of the Green Design Show will co-locate again with Decor + Design in 2025.
Artisanal Smart Furniture
Smart technology is seamlessly embedding itself into furniture, enhancing functionality and convenience. Innovations include wireless charging integration into desks, nightstands and tables plus adjustable and app-controlled furniture. Ambient, SMART lighting that can adapt to the mood are also popular.
One trend we we will see further integrated in 2025 are artisanal twists on smart furniture. Artisanal and handcrafted furniture gives a sense of uniqueness and authenticity that softens the sterility of tech. Expect to see technology presented in one-of-a-kind designs, combining heritage with innovation.
Modular and Multifunctional Designs
As living spaces shrink in urban areas, the demand for adaptable furniture grows. Modular furniture is no longer just a practical solution but also a stylish one. Look for convertible pieces, stackable and foldable furniture and reconfigurable sofas such as the Ethos Sofa below by E9 Design, exhibitors in 2024.
Soft Curves and Organic Shapes
The past few years have been all about embracing softness and fluidity in furniture design. Harsh geometric lines are still giving way to organic, curved silhouettes that promote relaxation. Trending items include curved sofas and chairs, rounded edges and asymmetrical forms; avant-garde and organic designs that double as sculptural statement pieces.
Vintage Revival and Timeless Classics
Nostalgia continues to influence furniture design as the world looks back to (perceived) simpler times. The revival of mid-century modern and art deco styles brings timeless elegance into contemporary homes. Hallmarks include velvet upholstery and other luxurious textures, brass and gold finishes and statement pendant lighting.
