Passion can translate an interest into a thriving business. Ten years ago, Andrew Johnston and his wife Colleen started a homewares business in Melbourne that has since grown into an extensive luxury indoor and outdoor furniture company. Satara Australia now distributes throughout the whole of Australia, New Zealand and to several other countries.
Satara’s collections are informed by global trends, yet have a quintessentially Australian edge. Andrew and Colleen love travelling the world with their family, in order to experience amazing architecture, furniture, decor, people and cultures. These inspirations are reflected in their imported pieces, which are often designed in house.
However, the Satara range maintains a relaxed feel that is perfect for the Antipodean lifestyle. Many of the materials they use are natural, including rope, handwoven rattan and wood. While the range is mid-high end, it’s also ideal for indoor and outdoor entertaining and has an unpretentious feel.
2018 has been a busy year thus far for Satara. They undertake both residential and commercial projects, often working directly with major interior designers. Past clients have included Crown, Spicers, Sheraton, QT and Hayman Island Resorts.
“This year we’re seeing a lot of demand for our rope sofas and chairs, as well as our complementing indoor furniture and homewares,” says Andrew. The beauty of Satara is that they offer holistic solutions, plus a ‘’mix and match” approach for interior designers.
“The vast majority of pieces can work together, so that you don’t have to commit to a whole set but can pick and choose from different ranges.”
The collections feature a variety of textures and materials but are bound together by their exceptional craftsmanship. There’s a lot of beautiful wood, particularly teak and oak, which is then treated and stained in a variety of ways for versatility. Sourced primarily from Indonesia and Vietnam, sometimes from China, all the pieces have a warmth which fits well with the concept of everyday Australian luxury.
Satara will be releasing over 150 new additions to its ranges in time for Decor + Design, including a new range of indoor sofas and lounge chairs. Satara’s indoor furniture ranges cater for all aspects of furnishing a home or commercial space.
There will also be pieces from a new range of reclaimed teak, plus outdoor pieces made from powder-coated aluminium. They will also launch some new, luxe fabrics which will be sure to have visitors talking!
